Prepare for Traveling Beforehand

Before you assemble your kit, you should make sure your vehicle is prepared to travel! This includes making sure you have your tire chains, if used, fitted properly and that your tires have good pressure for the cold weather. You should also make sure that you check your vehicle’s battery, lights, heater, and defroster before embarking.

Finally, make sure you have your radio programmed with emergency messages and traffic reports in mind, as you don’t want to be caught unawares.

Building Your Winter Kit

When you’re building your kit the most important thing is to keep yourself warm. You do this by packing items like a blanket, gloves, boots, and similar in order to make sure you have the highest possible body heat. You also want to make sure you have batteries, a flashlight, and snacks to keep your energy high. Additionally, you’ll want to pack tire chains, a spare set, an ice/snow remover tool, jumper cables, and road flares, just for extra safety.
